Kansas Part II

So here is Part II of our Kansas trip. On the Saturday after we arrived, went to Abilene, the home of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower attended elementary school through high school in Abilene. Of course, that wasn't the reason we went. We went to Abilene for the Abilene and Smokey Valley Railroad and Excursion Train, where the boys Great Uncle Jim volunteers and is the train engineer. These are pictures of our trip to Abilene.

As you can see Nathan was very excited about getting on the train.

Christopher meanwhile, had a little bit of an attitude that day, and started off not wanting to be in pictures.

Christopher is still in a serious mood.

Fortunately, nothing like a bag of strawberries to get everyone in a better mood.

Christopher had a good time with Papa.

Nathan, as usual, is all about hanging with mommy.

Nathan got to hang out with Uncle Jim in the engine room during a break. Christopher, refused to pose for pictures.

After the train ride, we went to get lunch at the Brookville Hotel, which is famous for its fried chicken. All they serve at Brookville is fried chicken and the sides that come with it. After a filling delicious lunch, we went to check out a historic carousel. The carousel was hand carved in 1901 and was listed as a National Historic Carousel in 1995, one of twelve in the U.S. to date.

For some reason, the boys decided to ride in a sled instead of a horse on the carousel.

As you can see, the boys were exhausted from the trip. They slept through our stop at Lindsborg, Kansas, which is known for its Swedish heritage. Lindsborg is known as "Little Sweden" because it was settled by Swedish immigrants in the 19th century. Robin's great grandmother was part of that settlement, so we may have to take another trip back next time with the boys awake.
